Posted by DEAN SKIP RUTHERFORD – Susan Ivey, the chairman of Reynolds American Inc., spoke today at the Clinton School. She talked about pending legislation (which Reynolds American opposes) that would give the FDA significant regulatory authority over tobacco products. She then answered several tough questions from a well-informed audience. Obviously a pro, Ivey delivered her prepared remarks very well, leaving plenty of time for questions which she handled with poise. Agree or disagree with her, she is the first woman to lead a U.S. cigarette company and is one of the most powerful women in the country. She’s also on the board of trustees at Wake Forest and the University of Florida Foundation.
One interesting fact: speakers who participate in Clinton School programs sign a poster which is framed and displayed at the end of the semester. Ivey’s signed comments were noteworthy: “Thanks for respecting a wide range of policies and opinions. A good experience.” That’s what education is all about. That’s why we invited her.
Tomorrow night we welcome Former Secretary of Defense William Cohen to the Clinton School.
