Dr. Earl Lewis became the sixth President of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in March 2013.

A noted social historian, Dr. Lewis has held faculty appointments at the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Michigan, and Emory University, where he served as provost, and has authored or co-authored eight books.

A native of Norfolk, Virginia, Dr. Lewis earned an undergraduate degree in history and psychology from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Minnesota. As the leader of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Dr. Lewis has reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to the humanities, the arts, and higher education by emphasizing the importance of continuity and change.
