As part of a Clinton School class on decision analysis, a group of Clinton School students are helping the City of North Little Rock conduct a “walkability” study of a local neighborhood.
The students will join with residents of the Park Hill area on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 4:00 p.m. to walk the neighborhood and observe factors that impact how walkable it is. Following the event, the students will produce a final report to present to the neighborhood association. Below is a press release about the effort:
(North Little Rock, AR) Park Hill residents are invited to participate in a Walkability Workshop on November 15, 2012 from 4:00—8:00 pm at Trinity Lutheran Church at 3802 N Olive Street in North Little Rock. A potluck dinner will be held after the walk portion of the event.
A Walkability Workshop is an experiential tool used to engage community members in observing the physical structure of their neighborhoods and how walkable they are. Walkability can be impacted by the presence or lack of sidewalks, speed limits, landscaping, medians, crosswalks, lighting, and signage. Walkable neighborhoods have been shown to substantially increase property values and economic activity.
The Walkability Workshop will begin at 4:00 pm with a walk to predetermined points in the Park Hill neighborhood. Small groups will go to one of five locations to gain perspective on the current conditions of intersections and streetscapes. Participants will take pictures, sketch the area, observe traffic behavior, and measure curbs and street widths. Walk facilitators will lead discussions related to safety, aesthetics, and the observations evoked by a particular location.
After the walk, participants will return to Trinity Lutheran Church for a potluck dinner and presentation on key walkability concepts. Participants will share what they saw on their walk and work with their team to develop visions for the future. Interested individuals who cannot attend the walk portion of the workshop are welcome to join at 5:30 p.m. for the ensuing discussion.
Clinton School students will work with the City of North Little Rock to produce a final report and presentation to the Park Hill Neighborhood Association about steps that may be taken to improve their neighborhood.
