Posted by student TODD MOORE – Outward Bound CEO John Read unveiled a plan to begin a new center for Little Rock youth during a lecture Friday at the Clinton School.
Launching in 2010, Outward Bound Little Rock, a branch of the largest nonprofit, adventure-based education organization in the world, will provide hands-on learning through outdoor adventure within a nationwide system of wilderness expeditions.
Read, who holds an MBA from Harvard and was recognized by Newsweek magazine as one of 15 people who “make America Great” in 2006, lectured on the importance of experiential leadership – particularly for youth.
Most of what young people learn about leadership comes from media portrayals of leadership and social media lacking authenticity, which Read characterized as ‘Tweetership.’
“We have to be careful what young people learn about leadership from watching ‘Survivor’ and shows like that; does that constitute leadership?” Read said. “This is 180 degrees from the philosophy of my organization. Competition is fine, but the manner … in which you lead to a successful conclusion is found as often from the back as the front.”
Outward Bound is in more than 30 countries around the world delivering experiences to about 29,000 young people and adults and another 45,000 kids in 160 Expeditionary Learning Schools (public schools) across the country, according to its website.
Video of Read’s lecture will be posted soon at www.clintonschoolspeakers.com.
