Clinton School student Kate Cawvey, Clinton School graduate Sophia Said and Steve Copely from the Arkansas Interfaith Conference worked together to launch Little Rock’s first multi-faith youth group. The group conducted its first meeting on Feb. 16 at the Clinton School.
Ten youth participated representing the three Abrahamic faiths; however, the group is looking to recruit more diverse youth representatives from other belief systems, Cawvey said.
The goal of the group is to allow youth to define themselves and listen to other’s self-definition as a means to dispel preconceived notions. The ultimate hope is to empower youth to put an end to discriminatory behaviors and create a peaceful and inclusive community, Cawvey said.
The group launched with activities that provoked conversations on stereotypes, respectfully talking about issues of faith with others and values needed for living in a multi-faith society. Next, the youth are planning a community service project to demonstrate their unity and act upon their shared value of helping others, Cawvey said.
