Student Working with Local Homeless Shelter

Clinton School student Dixon McReynolds (’12) has been hired at Our House, a shelter for the working homeless, to help coordinate efforts to find permanent housing for shelter occupants.

Our House provides the working homeless with shelter, housing, job training, education and free childcare and summer youth programs, in order to equip them with skills to be successful in the workforce, the community and in their families.

McReynolds will work through the Rapid Rehousing program, which was created under Title XII of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The program is administered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Congress allocated $1.5 million for communities to provide financial assistance and services to either prevent individuals and families from becoming homeless or help those who are experiencing homelessness to be quickly re-housed and stabilized.

A native of Cleveland, Ohio, McReynolds has worked with the homeless for 11 years, and was recognized by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in 2007 for his work with homeless veterans in Las Vegas. In 2009, he received the Governor’s Volunteer Service award for his work with the homeless population in Tacoma Washington.

“Several months ago, when Dixon had first arrived in Little Rock for the Clinton School, he came by to offer his services as a volunteer,” said , executive director of Our House. “I was immediately impressed by him – by his passion for helping the homeless and his decade of experience in implementing programs and services that equip homeless people with the skills to make it on their own. I am excited about Dixon joining our team for all that he brings to our organization and to the people that we service.”
