Greening Sturgis Hall

The project to complete the “greening” of Sturgis Hall, the Clinton School main campus, is moving forward with contractors now bidding on the different aspects of the project. Construction will begin this summer

Funded through money provided under the federal stimulus program, the project will reduce the building’s carbon footprint through new energy regulation systems, added insulation, reprogrammed HVAC equipment and improved ventilation, among other sustainability measures.

Upon completion of the project, the school expects the building to receive LEED certification for Existing Buildings from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Built in 1899, Sturgis Hall, formerly the Choctaw Station, is the oldest building in Arkansas registered with the intent to receive LEED certification. If certified, it would be the oldest college building in the world to receive certification under the LEED for Existing Buildings Rating System for operations and maintenance of the building.

The energy efficiency improvement measures for the building will reduce energy use and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as well as reduce emissions that affect human health.
