Shanell Ransom (‘16) has been announced as a Program Officer with the Samuel S. Fels Fund, a private independent foundation with a commitment to improving conditions and opportunities for historically marginalized communities within the City of Philadelphia.
Beginning January 1, Ransom will be responsible for the social, racial, and economic justice grants portfolio while increasing her focus on “Beyond the Grant” support for the Fels Fund’s grantee partners. She previously served as the Grants and Operations Manager with the Fels Fund.
The Fels Fund provides grants to support services, advocacy, and activities that promote a more socially, racially, and economically just society.
“I first learned of philanthropy at the Clinton School in Dr. Charlotte Williams’ class,” Ransom said. “I was able to better understand the social sector, value my identity even more, and began to struggle with the complexity of social good and how to fund it.”
As part of her Capstone project work, Ransom was based in Philadelphia and served as an intern for the Wells Fargo Regional Foundation. Ransom documented and created an evaluation framework for the national expansion of the neighborhood planning grants program.
For her International Public Service Project in the summer of 2015, she traveled to Belize City, Belize, to work with the country’s Ministry of Education.
In addition to her Master of Public Service, Ransom earned her bachelor’s degree from the College of Charleston where she was a program coordinator with the Center for Civic Engagement and a part of the Bonner Leaders program.
