Posted by BEN BEAUMONT – After graduating from the Clinton School on December 14, Wambui Ngugi returned to her home country of Kenya to find turmoil surrounding the country’s December 27 presidential election when alleged fraud sparked violence after incumbent President Mwai Kibaki defeated opposition rival Raila Odinga.
We are relieved to learn that Wambui is safe. A political activist who has worked to register young people to vote and encourage them to participate in the political process, Wambui is devoted to a democratic Kenya. Another former Clinton School student and reporter for KUAR radio in Little Rock, Malcolm Glover, reached Wambui for a telephone interview about the situation in Kenya. The BBC reports today that 350 people have died in the violence and another 180,000 Kenyans have been displaced by the hunanitarian crisis.
