Lowery Earns Shannon Butler Award

Posted by BEN BEAUMONT – J.D. Lowery, who graduates Saturday from the Clinton School along with 29 fellow classmates, has won the 2009 Shannon Butler Bridge Builder Award, given in honor of the former Clinton Foundation deputy director and current director of City Year Little Rock.

The award goes to the student in each graduating class who exhibits the same selfless “bridge-building” attitude displayed by Butler through her work in helping to coordinate the opening of the Clinton Presidential Center and the incorporation of the Clinton School.

J.D. is recognized for both an outstanding attitude and an exception record of service while he’s been at the Clinton School. As a result of his International Public Service Project and his final Capstone work, J.D. forged a partnership between the Clinton Foundation’s Climate Initiative and the state of Arkansas to fight the affects of climate change throughout the Natural State.

“Recognized publicly by both President Clinton and Governor Mike Beebe, he made results happen in an effective and efficient manner,” said Dean Skip Rutherford. “But beyond his success with his projects, his wonderful sense of humor, his “can do” attitude, his sensitivity to others, his support for the school along with his terrific Dizzle Down Under blog that he wrote while being in Australia,  all made and make him special.”

J.D. is the second student to receive the Shannon Butler award. The first was Julie Gerhki, a 2007 graduate who now works with the Wal-Mart Foundation. With the award, J.D. will receive a $1,000 stipend.
