Clinton School student Derrick Rainey (’12) spent his summer in Zanzibar, Tanzania, where he helped develop curriculum and programming for Creative Solutions Resource Systems, a nonprofit dedicated to reducing poverty through education and the arts.
As part of Rainey’s project, he helped Creative Solutions create a music program for students involved in the program. His efforts along with another volunteer from Vanderbilt University were recently highlighted in the monthly CSRS Newsletter:
After many failed attempts to start a music program at CSRS, it has finally happened. Thanks to Derrick Rainey of The Clinton School, who happens to be an incredible cellist and Tori Bates, a Vanderbilt volunteer, who has played harp for 11 years. Together they started working with students on the basics.
Derrick raised money and got donations of Ukuleles, recorders, rollup pianos and more. He worked continuously with two students who will become the permanent teachers and they are doing great! Margret, the main teacher who has only a first grade education has been a student here for 6 months. She is already speaking English and is studying computer as well as music. After only 2 months of music lessons she knows how to read music and play a couple of songs on the piano and the recorder. She also happens to have an exquisite singing voice.
