Application Deadline Approaches

The application deadline to enroll in the Clinton School Master of Public Service degree program next fall is rapidly approaching.

The school encourages those interested in furthering their knowledge and skill for a career in public service to submit an application by the postmark deadline of January 25, 2012. Admitted students will begin classes in August 2012.

The Clinton School is the first to offer the two-year MPS degree, which is designed to help students gain the knowledge and experience to further their careers in government, nonprofit, volunteer and private sector service.

“We are looking for applicants who are not only gifted academically, but are also passionate about helping others through public service,” said Skip Rutherford, dean of the Clinton School. “Our curriculum is designed to harness that passion by giving students the instruction and field service experiences to learn to make a positive difference in peoples’ lives.”

The MPS program blends a core set of coursework with field service projects and elective courses for a program grounded in distinct principles, but also tailored to individual interests and pursuits.

The program includes an International Public Service Project that takes students across the world to help government, nongovernment and nonprofit organizations.

Students come to the school from across Arkansas, the country and the world with past experiences ranging from service in Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, Teach for America and the military, to work in government, politics, business and the nonprofit sector.

Clinton School graduates have taken jobs with organizations including the Clinton Foundation, the Wal-Mart Foundation, City Year and the World Bank, among others.

“The Clinton School provided me with a diversified education, across multiple sectors and a great deal of field experience,” said Clinton School graduate Mike Townsend, who works in the Global Village Department at Habitat for Humanity International in Americus, Ga. “I certainly believe that the school helped me advance in my career significantly. I am able to contribute at a very high level in all aspects of my current role, whether it’s program development, planning, management or leadership.”

The MPS degree is an affordable option, especially in trying economic times, with the full 36-hour program costing less than $15,000 and numerous opportunities for financial aid.

Additionally, admitted MPS students who are interested may pursue concurrent degree programs in Law with the UALR Bowen School of Law; in Public Health with the UAMS Boozman College of Public Health; or in Business Administration with the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, Sam Walton College of Business.
