Posted by BEN BEAUMONT – The Verizon Foundation today presented a $5,500 grant to Arkansas Literacy Councils (ALC) for the research and creation of a literacy tutor training manual, a project being completed by three students from the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service.
The manual will be used by local literacy councils to train volunteers to become certified adult literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) tutors. It will incorporate courses from the Verizon Foundation’s Thinkfinity.org Web site, which delivers online educational resources for literacy instruction at no cost.
David Russell of Dallas, Verizon’s Southwest region vice president of external affairs, said the Verizon Foundation has long been committed to supporting technology-based approaches to literacy and education.
“We created this free, online resource to help volunteer tutors, teachers, literacy instructors, librarians, parents and others as they work to advance literacy and learning for both children and adults,” Russell said.
