Center on Community Philanthropy to Host Conversation in Pine Bluff

The Clinton School Center on Community Philanthropy invites the citizens of Pine Bluff to attend a community conversation on the issues of race and equity.

The discussion will explore how race impacts the Pine Bluff community and consider pathways to equity with topics on the multi-district school system, law enforcement, economic development, and healthcare.

The dialogue, titled, “Pathways to Racial Equity and Healing in Pine Bluff,” will be Tuesday, November 15, 2011, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Services Center.

“The Pine Bluff Community Conversation will focus on understanding structural racism while beginning to heal the wounds created by inequality”, said Dr. Charlotte L. Williams, Assistant Professor and Director of the Clinton School Center on Community Philanthropy.

“The conversation will be the first step in a planned design to move members of the Pine Bluff community from conversation to action-based community philanthropy, community development, and community wealth-building,” Williams said.

“It’s our hope that these activities will help government, business, and social sector leaders understand the nature of racial problems, determine what perpetuates those problems and identify where the system needs repair,” Williams said.

The Pine Bluff Community Conversation is part of a broader initiative led by the Center on Community Philanthropy titled “Pathways to Racial Healing and Equity in the American South: A Community Philanthropy Strategy”. The broader initiative was launched in April at a conference in Little Rock that explored the issue of structural racism.

“The Pine Bluff conversation will be another productive step in the Center’s journey to understand and address this predicament — specifically, its impact on Pine Bluff and Jefferson County,” Williams said.

The conversation is free and open to residents in Pine Bluff and Jefferson County. People are encouraged to RSVP by emailing cccampbell@clintonschool.uasys.edu or calling 683-5656.
