The Clinton School’s Center on Community Philanthropy is set to host its second summit focused on “Racial Healing and Equity in the American South.”
The summit will be Thursday, March 29, and Friday, March 30, at the Clinton School and will focus on sharing information on structural racism and promoting community conversation on issues involving race and equity.
“Although our approach seeks to heal and understand, we also hope to move to action based on community philanthropy, community development, and community wealth-building through racial, gender and class lenses,” said Charlotte L. Williams, director of the Center on Community Philanthropy.
The summit with feature a keynote address from professor john a. powell, an internationally recognized scholar on race, poverty, and regional equity. Powell was recently named director of the Haas Center for Diversity and Inclusion at the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to this appointment, he served as director of the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at the Ohio State University.
Professor powell will focus on unconscious bias and community philanthropy as a tool to dismantle unjust structures. Additional panels, comprised of local and regional leaders, will provide information on institutional and community efforts to bring about racial healing and equity in the American South.
