Center on Philanthropy Concludes Dialogue on Race

The Center on Community Philanthropy concluded its two-day conference featuring a dialogue on race and equity in the South on Friday with a lecture from Dr. David Williams of Harvard University.

Williams, who holds appointments in the Harvard School of Public Health and the sociology department, discussed the affects of racial divides on community health and development. Video of Williams’ lecture will be posted soon.

Several Clinton School students participated in the two-day conference including Kate Cawvey, Fernando Cutz, Derrick Rainey, Hilary Trudell and Ryan Williams.

The students participated in a panel discussion about their work to facilitate dialogues on race at Phillips Community College in Helena-West Helena. The student team completed the project as part of the Clinton School Practicum program.

Dr. Charlotte Lewellen-Williams, director of the Center on Community Philanthropy, was pleased with the two-day conference.

“We wanted to create an opportunity to have deliberate, purposeful, and in some instances uncomfortable conversations about this issue of race and privilege,” Williams told KUAR public radio. “Yet, we are having these discussions in a way that does not evoke fear or anger, so we have the meaningful fact-based conversations that help us all move forward.”
