Clinton School graduate Kate Cawvey (’12) was recently hired as an equal opportunity specialist with the Housing and Urban Development – HUD – Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity in St. Louis.
Cawvey landed the job as part of the Presidential Management Fellowship program, which gives advanced degree candidates the opportunity to work in entry-level positions within agencies of the federal government.
Cawvey was among 7 percent of Presidential Management Fellowship applicants who were selected as finalists in the program. Her status as a finalist gave her the opportunity to apply for the HUD position, which she will now work in for 2 years.
In her new position, Cawvey will be involved with enforcing fair housing legislation, including Title VIII of the Civil Rights Acts which prohibits housing discrimination on the basis on race, color, religion, sex or national origin; Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act; and the Housing for Older Persons Act.
She will investigate allegations of housing discrimination through interviews and fact-finding, work toward conciliation agreements between parties and perform outreach to educate the public and housing providers on fair housing regulations.
“In HUD’s Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity I will be able to act on my passion for equal opportunity and social justice,” Cawvey said. “I’m excited to find a job that allows me to work to make our nation more just while expanding the skills in my professional repertoire.”
