Posted by BEN BEAUMONT – Recent Clinton School lecturer David Western, founder of the African Wildlife Conservation Centre in Kenya, sat down with ESPN.com Outdoors after his speech to discuss his thoughts on community-based conservation — an approach to wildlife conservation that takes humans into account as part of the ecosystem.
Western discusses an encounter he had with a member of the nomadic Massai tride while tracking wildlife in Kenya that led him to develop this approach to conservation:
“He said to me, ‘Why don’t you ask us — we know exactly what they’re doing,’” Western recalled recently in an address at the Clinton School of Public Service, in Little Rock, Ark. “So I said, fine. And I began to ask. And I was surprised at the depth of knowledge.”
