Posted by BEN BEAUMONT – Clinton School Dean Skip Rutherford, in a interview with John Brummett of Stephen’s Media, recently discussed President-elect Barack Obama’s tapping of Rahm Emanuel as the future White House Chief of Staff. Rutherford and Emanuel worked together on Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign and went on to work together on issues in the Clinton White House, namely the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement. From Brummett’s column:
Rutherford recalls that he and Emanuel, who became pals, toiled together in a war room of sorts passing NAFTA, the Republican-embraced free trade agreement that American working people have come to generally detest.
Rutherford recalls Emanuel’s focus, energy and intelligence, not to mention his brash, if often likable, humor. He remembers Emanuel’s hanging up the phone after trying to sell NAFTA to a typically balking Democratic congressman in the summer of 1993, and saying, “This is the Lamaze method of government – breathe, push and deliver.”
