Help the Gulf

Clinton School graduate Nicholas Hall has put together a guide for those interested in helping in efforts to clean up the Gulf oil spill:

The following organizations, among others, are accepting volunteers and donations for the continued efforts on the cleanup of the Gulf Oil spill.  The organizations will be identified with a short explanation, their efforts, and how donations can be accepted and/or used.

LA Gulf Response
LA GULF RESPONSE is a coordinated effort between several non-profit or governmental conservation and environmental organizations.  Together our organizations have made a significant commitment to the restoration of coastal Louisiana reflected by our established body of work in this region.  They work with five environmental/coastal non-profits.  Volunteer Opportunities: they do not have any volunteer projects yet, however they are collecting volunteers information for future projects.  Donate: donations will be used for future volunteer projects as well as financial support for professional clean up contractors.

Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund
With the Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund, the Greater New Orleans Foundation will serve as a conduit between the donor community and our nonprofit partners. We will fund philanthropic dollars back into the affected communities on a short and long-term bases.  Volunteer Opportunities: None Donation Opportunities: The fund will make emergency grants to nonprofit organizations helping the victims of the oil spill.

Colbert Nation Gulf of America Fund
The Colbert Nation Gulf of America Fund managed by the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, was started with a donation from Stephen Colbert and Bing.com.  The Baton Rouge Area Foundation works as a philanthropic donor to local nonprofits.  Volunteer Opportunities: None Donations Opportunities: The donations will go towards gulf cleanup efforts as well as organizations working to help families and businesses suffering from job losses created by the oil spill.

Volunteer Florida
This is a website and organization that promotes volunteerism in Florida.  They have set up an registration page for volunteers.  Volunteers are not needed yet, because professional staff is being used.

Mississippi Volunteer Commission
This is the website used by the state of Mississippi to encourage volunteerism in MS.  Portions of the webpage have been dedicated to jobs and volunteer opportunities in response to the Gulf Oil Spill.  Like Florida untrained volunteers are not need yet, but are encouraged to register for future opportunities.
