Indonesian Fulbright Scholars Hold Retreat

About 30 Indonesian students, including three from the Clinton School, gathered in Little Rock for the sixth retreat of Tsunami Aceh Fulbright Scholarship. This scholarship was created following the 2004 Asian tsunami and is funded by the Bush and Clinton Foundations. Both Presidents George H. W. Bush and President Clinton visited Aceh, Indonesia, after the tsunami to witness the devastation. Since then, 69 students from Aceh have been provided scholarships to pursue their master and doctoral degrees in the United States.

These students have been placed in universities across the country, including Brandeis University, Columbia University, Texas A&M University and the University of Arkansas. Clinton School students Rina Meutia (’07), Faisal Umar (’10) and Ratnasari Dewi (’11) are all participants in the Fulbright program.

“I am so proud of those who can continue their studies and commit to rebuild Aceh after the tsunami,” Clinton School associate dean Mike Hemphill said at the retreat. “They are so brave. I am even more proud of having three of them at the Clinton School.”
