– The Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation will release its report profiling immigrants in Arkansas and their impact on the state’s economy. Dr. Randy Capps, a demographer and senior policy analyst with the Migration Policy Institute, will lead the presentation.

– The Clinton School will join Philander Smith College to host a lecture featuring author, actor, military veteran and Dancing with the Stars winner J.R. Martinez. His book, “Full of Heart,” chronicles his story of survival and recovery after he suffered severe facial injuries and burns from a land mine in Iraq in 2003.
Rep. Davy Carter, Speaker of the Arkansas House of Representatives

– The first Republican speaker of the Arkansas House of Representatives since reconstruction, Carter will discuss the major issues facing the state heading into the 89th session of the Arkansas General Assembly, which begins on Jan. 14.
Arkansas Children’s Hospital: The New South Wing

– Kent Taylor of Cromwell Architects and David Berry of Arkansas Children’s Hospital will discuss the design and construction of the $121 million addition of the South Wing to Arkansas Children’s Hospital, the region’s major provider of services to children. The pair will give a virtual tour of the recently completed 258,000 square foot structure.
“Gee’s Bend,” a panel discussion with the Arkansas Repertory Theatre

– Members of the cast and crew of the Arkansas Repertory Theatre’s production of “Gee’s Bend” will discuss performing the play, which is based on the true story of a remarkable women’s sewing circle in Gee’s Bend, Ala. The play follows the life of Sadie Pettway and the women in her sewing circle as they turn to quilting to provide comfort and creative expression to their lives. What begins as a labor of love soon turns into a spiritual and artistic awakening.
“The Status of Women in Arkansas 1973: Four Decades Later,” Lynnette Watts, CEO, Women’s Foundation of Arkansas

– Watts will discuss the release of a 2013 update to the 1973 report by the Arkansas Commission on The Status of Women. The original report was edited by the late Diane Blair of Fayetteville who was chair of the commission. This is the first time the report has been updated in 40 years. Clinton School students, faculty and staff were among those working with Women’s Foundation on the 2013 update.
“Reading Is Not Optional,” Walter Dean Myers, National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature

– Myers, the third National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, is a critically acclaimed author of books for young people, including “Sunrise Over Fallujah,” “Fallen Angels,” “Monster,” and “All The Right Stuff.” Myers has received numerous accolades, including two Newbery Honor Awards and five Coretta Scott King Awards. For his 2-year tenure as National Ambassador, Walter Dean has selected “Reading Is Not Optional” as his banner platform.
