Posted by DEAN SKIP RUTHERFORD – Monday Sept. 3, Labor Day, will be a holiday at the Clinton School, though for many of our students who are dealing with class assignments, it will be probably be a day of reading and catching up.
Labor Day began in 1882 and became a national holiday in 1894 — only five years before the Clinton School’s home, the Choctaw Passenger Train Station (now Sturgis Hall) was built.
While we will be closed on Monday to honor the working women and men of our country, we have a major event planned Friday, Sept. 7. John Sweeney, president of the national AFL-CIO, is speaking at the Clinton School at noon. (Reservations publicprograms@clintonschool.uasys.edu or call Nikolai DiPippa at 501-683-5239). Sweeney’s visit has the added impact of knowing that the AFL-CIO has not yet made an endorsement in the 2008 Presidential race, and it will be most interesting to hear what he says about the upcoming election. His appearance here could not be more timely.
As an added weekend treat, C-Span will broadcast Stan Tiner’s recent Clinton School speech Saturday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. Tiner, the executive editor of The Sun Herald in Biloxi, Miss., spoke on Hurricane Katrina and the Mississippi Gulf Coast — two years following the 2005 hurricane.
Enjoy the weekend. Be Safe.
