The wife of Senator Barack Obama made her 17th visit to the Hawkeye state since March on Saturday speaking at Sheldon Middle School in rural northwestern Iowa. Mrs. Obama gave a passionate speech for nearly an hour to a crowd of around sixty people in an attempt to drum up support for her husband as the campaigns move into the final leg of the race to the caucuses.
Mrs. Obama told the crowd of Iowans that she was speaking to them “not as a wife, but as a mother” and that it was worry for her daughters’ future that inspired her to support her husband’s political aspirations.
Alternating between personal stories of overcoming hardships and fiery critiques of the state of the nation, Mrs. Obama told the crowd gathered in Sheldon that our country is on the wrong track: “we’re too divided, we’re led by fear, we’re losing good jobs, our health care system is in shambles, and the middle class is under constant pressure.” She then told the crowd that the problem isn’t a lack of resources or plans, but a dearth of empathetic leadership.
Her answer to these problems: elect her husband president.
Mrs. Obama claimed that her husband is the only person capable of placing America back on track. She told the crowd of Iowans that if elected, Barack Obama would lead with honesty, courage, and wisdom and would bridge the divides that are tearing our country apart.
In her closing remarks she pleaded with the crowd to caucus for hope in a brighter future by caucusing for her husband.
Barack Obama will need every vote his wife can deliver if he is to win what has become a statistical dead heat in Iowa between himself and fellow Democratic presidential hopefuls Hillary Clinton and John Edwards.
It’s my guess that he picked up a few votes in Sheldon on Saturday.
