On Immigration

Posted by DEAN SKIP RUTHERFORD – Today I joined with a group of business, civic and religious leaders in announcing the establishment of the Arkansas Friendship Coalition, a statewide advocacy group which believes immigration is a federal issue and should be dealt with at the federal level, not by state and local governments. While I understand immigration is a highly charged political issue, I believe we should treat those who are seeking a better life in our country with dignity and respect and with strong sensitivity and compassion regarding their children. In addition, The Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation (www.wrfoundation.org) makes a compelling case about the positive economic impact immigrants are having on and in Arkansas.

Clinton School student Penelope Sur, Stephens Inc. CEO Warren Stephens, Tyson Inc. Executive Archie Schaffer, Alltel Vice President Randy Wilbourn along with Neal Sealy of ACORN; Rita Sklar of the ACLU; Attorneys Graham Catlett and Paul Charton and Mike Mattox, minister of Little Rock’s First United Methodist Chruch are among the coalition’s founding members.
