Remembering Socks, America’s Most Famous Presidential Cat

Posted by DEAN SKIP RUTHERFORD – Socks, America’s most famous presidential cat, has died. Socks lived in the Clinton White House from 1993-2001 after making the move with the Clinton family from Little Rock. On my visits to the White House, I would frequently see Socks who spent a great deal of time in Betty Currie’s office, next to the Oval Office.

In 2002, Socks served as Grand Marshal of the Little Rock Christmas Parade riding in the front seat of Bill Clinton’s Mustang. (The Mustang is on display at the Arkansas Museum of Automobiles on Petit Jean Mountain near Morrilton.)

After leaving the White House and living with Currie and her husband, Bob, Socks participated in humane society related charity events.

In 2005, Socks donated a few “pursonally signed” photos for a charity event in Little Rock. We have one of those rare “signed” photographs, and we will display it at the Clinton School during our upcoming public programs. We’ll also put it  on the blog so everyone can see the “paw print signature” of the adopted kitten from Little Rock who became a universal icon while capturing the hearts of children and pet lovers all over the world.
