Remembering the George House

dsc_5204.JPGPosted by BEN BEAUMONT – A new sign sits in front of the historic Choctaw Station commemorating the Alexander George House, a historic home that once stood on the Clinton Center property.

George (1812-1877), a wealth German immigrant active in Little Rock’s business and political circles, built the home around 1858. One of the largest estates in Arkansas at the time, it featured a vineyard, winery, stables and garden. According to legend, George built large underground tunnels that ran from the House to the Arkansas River.

The House was involved in defending Little Rock during the Civil War and housed the first St. Vincent Hospital before serving as an administrative office building for the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad Company from 1902 to 1964.
