“Start where the people are and help them achieve their goals” said Ritu Sharma, co-founded Women Thrive Worldwide and leader for gender equality, in a speech last week at the Clinton School.
Sharma has been featured on Lifetime Television, interviewed on countless shows, and regularly contributes to the Huffington Post. After an introduction from Clinton School Student, Veena Rangaswami (’13), Sharma launched into an interactive discussion about women’s’ rights worldwide.
She immediately took questions from the audience and answered them throughout her talk, displaying a firm grasp on any and all issues related to women’s rights.
Ignoring men and their role in human rights issues is not acceptable Sharma said. Giving women loans that their husbands may steal or abuse fails is counterproductive to assistance projects, she said.
“The solutions are not simplistic but they are common sense,” she said.
No woman’s problems can be solved with a one-size-fits-all solution, Sharma said.
She urged the audience to write a letter to their local congressmen, informing him or her that the constituents care about women and advancing their position in the community and society as a whole.
