Posted by DEAN SKIP RUTHERFORD – The Arkansas Studies Institute (ASI), home to the Clinton School’s Rivermarket Campus on President Clinton Avenue, will officially open at an evening event Saturday, March 21. The Clinton School (407 President Clinton Avenue) began classes in our new space in January, but we’ll be hosting an open house on March 21 in conjunction with ASI’s opening. The open house will begin immediately following the 6:30 p.m. dedication ceremony.
Featured in our new space are panels and photographs highlighting historic Arkansas scenes. Among those photographs include downtown Camden and downtown Eureka Springs; the 1913 University of Arkansas football team; the 1927 flood at Arkansas City and Lake Village; the first AQ Chicken Hut in Springdale; Arlington Hotel in Hot Springs; Old Main in Fayetteville; an elementary school classroom in Wilson; a school in Atkins; the Lake Norfork ferry; Sturgis Lumber Company in Malvern; and mining in Bauxite.
Historical panels are also prominently placed throughout the building. In the Clinton School section they include a young Governor Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton; Clinton School Founding Dean David Pryor on the campaign trail; Governor Winthrop Rockefeller on the State Capitol Steps during a memorial service following the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; and Clinton School alumnus Mollie Merry Campbell working in Malawi.
