The UALR Bowen School of Law and the Clinton School will host a presentation titled, “For the Public Good: Rethinking the Pro Bono Service of Arkansas Attorneys” on Thursday, April 29, at 12:00 p.m. at Sturgis Hall.
A group of students taking a “Public Service Law” class at the Bowen school will present on how to better utilize attorney efforts in order to serve underprivileged Arkansans. The idea for the program came from conversations during the class, an elective taught by Bowen School Dean John DiPippa through a joint partnership between the two schools.
“This class has been a pleasure to teach and has also added value to both curriculums,” DiPippa said. “I believe the future of higher education must be open to interdisciplinary offerings as well as joint degrees to address the varying interests of our students.”
As economic issues continue to affect many families in Arkansas, legal services are needed for a number of reasons. The students believe that reframing pro bono legal services could allow for increased effectiveness through specialization of services provided.
“Student projects have the ability to address complex issues while providing an alternative solution that might be the answer,” said Clinton School Dean Skip Rutherford. “The power of collaborating efforts between two schools of higher learning is proving to create positive outcomes through the University of Arkansas System.”
