Little Rock City Sales Tax Election Panel

– The Clinton School will host a panel discussion on the upcoming election for the proposed sales tax increase in the City of Little Rock. City leaders have placed two ordinances on the ballot for a September 13 special election to increase the city’s sales tax rate by 1 percent – 3/8 of a percent for capital improvements and 5/8 of a percent for general obligations.
Robert Fogarty, director of evacuteer.org and founder of Dear World

– Fogarty started evacuteer.org, an emergency preparedness nonprofit, after he helped the City of New Orleans with the largest evacuation in U.S. history in advance of Hurricane Gustav. In 2010, he started Dear World, a nonprofit photography venture for social good. His photos are viewed 1.5 million times every month online.
National Day of Service: Supporting Troops and Firefighters

– Clinton School students will participate in the September 11 National Day of Service by conducting a letter and card writing campaign to support U.S. Military members who are serving overseas. To participate, stop by the Clinton School from 1-5 p.m. to write a supportive card or letter of appreciation to members of the armed forces. Cards and writing materials will be available on-site. Additionally, the school will be collecting monetary donations to support firefighters in the Central Arkansas area.
Jamie Naughton, speaker of the house, Zappos

– As “speaker of the house” for Zappos, a popular online shoe company, Naughton works directly with CEO Tony Hsieh to promote the unique culture for which the company has become known. The Zappos Family of companies was recognized in 2009 and 2010 by Fortune magazine as one of the 100 Best Companies to Work For.
“The State of the Economy,” Loretta Sanchez, Congresswoman, D-Calif.

– Rep. Sanchez is a member of the Joint Economic Committee, a small, bipartisan group of House and Senate members who investigate and hold hearings on a multitude of economic issues. A former financial analyst, she will discuss the state of the American economy.
Ruby Bridges, the first black student to integrate an all-white elementary school in the South

– Ruby Bridges Hall became the first black student to integrate an all-white elementary school in the South in November 1960 when she attended William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans. In the face of angry segregationist mobs, Bridges was escorted to school by federal marshals on Nov. 14, 1960 and was forced to attend classes alone after white parents pulled their children from the school in protest.
“Ring of Fire: The Songs of Johnny Cash,” a panel discussion

– In advance of the opening of the Arkansas Repertory Theatre’s production of “Ring of Fire: The Songs of Johnny Cash,” this panel discussion will feature members of the cast and crew of the show who will discuss their work to bring to life the story of Cash’s most famous songs.
Ray Scott, Arkansas’s coordinator of Health Information Technology

– In March 2010, Gov. Mike Beebe appointed Scott to head Arkansas’s Office of Health Information Technology (HIT), which was established to coordinate all HIT-related activities in the state and develop a statewide health information exchange. Scott will discuss the agency’s efforts to improve the quality of health care in the state through technology.
Jack Sims, founder of World Toilet Organization

– Founded in 2004, World Toilet Organization (WTO) is a global non-profit organization committed to improving sanitation conditions for people globally through powerful advocacy, inventive technology, education and building marketplace opportunities locally. Figures released by UNICEF and the World Health Organization show that 2.6 billion people worldwide are without access to adequate, clean sanitation.
Jared Cleveland, superintendent of Lavaca (Ark.) public schools

– Cleveland will discuss his district’s creation of a school-based health clinic, which provides local families access to general medical care, dentistry, audiology and optometry. Part of the Arkansas Coordinated School Health Initiative, the clinic provides students and the community with services that haven’t been available in the area for more than 35 years.
