Students, Staff Member to Present at IMPACT Conference

Two Clinton School students and one staff member will present workshops at the 2013 IMPACT Conference at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque this week.

Mara D’Amico (’14) will present “A Liberated Approach to Service-Learning Reflection” with Michael Brouri. THe workshop will emphasize the importance of reflection in a service-learning or community service program and help participants learn how to make their reflection more engaging, inclusive and participatory. Participants will learn new tools to help change the structure and outcomes of their reflections and will put them into practice during the workshop.

Katie Milligan (’13) will present “Bringing Women to the Table: The Importance of Women, Development, and Social Change”. The workshop will be co-presented with Trish Flanagan (’13) via Skype.  The empowerment of women in developing nations is one of the most challenging and important issues facing the world today. In this session, participants will focus on the challenges and strategies for involving women in global social change. Through personal experiences, NGO critical analysis and an interactive discussion session, participants will be encouraged to ask difficult questions and critically analyze a case study empowerment program.   Participants will reflect and discuss on what they have learned regarding best practices implemented to develop the role of women as change agents in a global context.

Julianne Dunn, assistant director of field service education at the Clinton School, will present a workshop on the transition from direct service to a service career. She and former Arkansas Coalition for Excellence executive director Hunter Phillips Goodman will discuss nonprofits and their work environments and helped students create the plan to achieve their career goals. Dunn was the 2010 IMPACT Conference Coordinator and both Dunn, and Goodman serve on the organization’s board of directors.

The Clinton School and UALR hosted the 2010 IMPACT Conference in downtown Little Rock. The conference is historically the largest gathering in the country focused on the civic engagement of college students in community service, service-learning, community-based research, advocacy and other forms of social action.
