Posted by DEAN SKIP RUTHERFORD – Monday, January 19, America will celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday with a Federal Holiday. This year it falls on the eve of the inauguration of the country’s first African American President, Barack Obama.
During his tenure as University of Arkansas Student Government President in 1997-98, Warwick Sabin led the successful effort to have schools in the University of Arkansas System commemorate the holiday. The UofA System celebrated the King Holiday for the first time in 1999. This year marks the UofA’s 10th anniversary.
A Marshall Scholar and New York native, Warwick now lives in Little Rock and is director of communications at the University of Central Arkansas.
