UACS History 101: How Did Sturgis Happen?

Posted by DEAN SKIP RUTHERFORD – In May 2003, when I was president of the Clinton Presidential Foundation, I received a letter from Dan Kelly, senior vice president of Bank of America in Dallas, saying that the Roy and Christine Sturgis Charitable Trust and Educational Trust had approved a $4 million grant for the Clinton School. This approval came following the recommendation of Cindy Miller of Little Rock who advised the Sturgis Trust on Arkansas issues.

The letter reads in part, “We are pleased to advise you that Bank of America, Trustee of the Roy and Christine Sturgis Charitable Trust and Educational Trust (the “Foundation”) has approved a total grant of $4,000,000 to the William Jefferson Clinton Presidential Foundation (the “Grantee”) for the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service located at the William Jefferson Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock.”

“The purpose of this grant is to renovate and construct the historic Choctaw Station to accommodate the classrooms, faculty, and administrative office, student commons and library for the Clinton School of Public Service.”

We remain grateful to the Sturgis Trust, to Cindy Miller and to Wilson Jones of the Rose Law Firm in Little Rock, who advises the Sturgis Trust on legal issues. The class of 2011, which will arrive in August, will be the fifth class to use Sturgis Hall.
