Pakistan Fighting for its Own Sake

Posted by BEN BEAUMONT – Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States, Husain Haqqani, said his country is now “fighting for our own sake,” against the Taliban in a speech today at the Clinton School.

Ambassador Haqqani discussed the history of the U.S./Pakistani relationship and said that much progress had been made between the two countries of late in the War in Afghanistan against both the Taliban and Al Qaida.

After a year of civilian rule under a new Pakistani government, the coutnry has improved its communcation and cooperation with the United States, Haqqani said.

A former leading journalist in Pakistan, Ambassador Haqqani has served in numerous positions in Pakistani government and politics, including as spokesman for past Prime Ministers Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto.

Named ambassador to the United States by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani in April 2008, Haqqani is an associate professor for international relations at Boston University, as well as a co-chair of the Project on Islam and Democracy at the Hudson Institute in Washington, D.C. He was formerly a visiting scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
