Former Congressman Ed Bethune was the first a number of Republicans who will speak at the Clinton School this month. Bethune, who served Arkansas’s second district in Washington from 1979 to 1985, discussed the current state of the American economy and the debate between capitalistic and socialistic economic policies.
“We’ve got some serious issues to deal with in this country and we don’t have a lot of time,” Bethune said.
Citing China’s rise and the growing debt in America, Bethune called for a return to “budget balance,” in American government.
“The debt is large but it is manageable,” he said.
Bethune said voters should ask one question to those seeking elected office in America:
“Will the policies you advocated promote growth and reduce debt?” Bethune asked.
Bethune also gave his views on the coming mid-term elections and the leading Republican candidates to challenge President Obama in 2012. Bethune cited South Dakota Senator John Thune as the leading candidate.

The only Republican elected to Congress from Arkansas’s second district since the Civil War, Bethune has spent the past 15 years practicing law in Washington D.C., where he’s represented clients such as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former House Majority Leader Tom Delay.
