Posted by student JAMES MITCHELL- Only two of the 15 presidential hopefuls have placed campaign offices in Spencer, Iowa: Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. The town of 11,000 in rural northwestern Iowa is fairly removed from the beaten campaign trails of Des Moines and eastern Iowa.
Katie Malkin is a Field Organizer from Georgia who is working at the Obama office in Spencer; Katie’s mother Anne has joined her in Spencer and will be volunteering with her daughter until the caucuses on Thursday. Katie admitted that being the only offices in town has resulted in a lot of support for Obama and Clinton in the area.
She was quick to point out, however, that while the national media is primarily focusing on Obama and Clinton, she has found a significant amount of support for the other Democratic candidates as well.
“Out here it’s a wide open race. And it’s not just Clinton and Obama either- I talk to people supporting Edwards, Richardson, and Biden all of the time. I know the national media isn’t really covering it, but I wouldn’t count out any of those guys.”
