John McCain won the Republican primary in South Carolina, but he’s lucky that his good friend Fred Thompson was also on the ballot. Thompson took enough votes away from Mike Huckabee to deny him the victory. Without Thompson, Huckabee most likely would have won. Still, Huckabee’s second place showing and his national appeal among evangelicals and conservatives makes him an attractive vice presidential choice if he doesn’t win the presidential nomination.

The Clinton School–and for that matter the entire University of Arkansas System–will be off Monday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It was only a few years ago when Warwick Sabin, then the student body president at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, began a grassroots campaign to give University of Arkansas students, faculty and staff the day off, as was already the case on a large number of college campuses.

For those who don’t know about KIPP schools, they are open-enrollment, mostly charter schools that cater to underserved populations. The KIPP School in Helena now serves grades 5-10 and will eventually extend to 12th grade and graduate its first full class in 2010.
