Today, on both Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Iauguration eve, the Clinton School joins citizens throughout the country in taking part in the “National Day of Service.” MLK Day has long been a day of service and President-elect Barack Obama has called Americans to recognize that as he prepares to be sworn in tomorrow as our first African American president.

As Dean Rutherford notes below, many Clinton School alumni, students and staff are in Washington today and tomorrow for the Inauguration festivities. We hope to have a few updates from them to share on the Clinton School Blog as Barack Obama becomes the nation’s 44th president.

Chris Pearson, a former Vermont state legislator, will visit the school and discuss the initiative which is working to inact a proposal to elect the president by a popular vote rather than through the Electoral College.

During his tenure as University of Arkansas Student Government President in 1997-98, Warwick Sabin led the successful effort to have schools in the University of Arkansas System commemorate the holiday. The UofA System celebrated the King Holiday for the first time in 1999. This year marks the UofA’s 10th anniversary.

We just got a news release from the Central Arkansas Library System (CALS) touting a February 6 fundraiser for the Arkansas Literary Festival later this spring. Attendees at the fundraiser will be the first to see the festival’s 2009 line up.
